 Yeshiva Atlanta

Dear YA Parents,

Welcome to the February installment of the parent newsletter. We will try to keep you up to date with everything happening here at Yeshiva. Of course, if you still have questions, please feel encouraged to get in touch for more details.

Please consider a gift to the ALEF fund, which helps children in our community receive a Jewish education when they otherwise could not afford it. You can designate up to $2500 of your taxes to go toward the ALEF fund, and you will receive the $2500 back when you file your tax returns. By clicking here you can get an early start on this effort. Thanks so much for considering.

In an effort to streamline communications, we will list community events and service opportunities on the “Community News” page of our website. This can be found under “Useful Links” or by directly accessing http://www.yeshivaatlanta.org/community-news.html Please check regularly for relevant opportunities. This newsletter is also available on our website, under the “Bulletins” menu.

Weather-related school closings: Unless you receive an email from us that indicates otherwise, we follow Dekalb County schools in case of weather-related closings (snow, icy conditions). So if Dekalb County Schools are closed for weather, so are we. You can check Star 94, WSBTV, etc. A good site to bookmark would be http://www.wsbtv.com/closings/index.html.

Once we make it through the winter (hopefully without missing any school days!), we are going to add a special holiday called Headmaster’s Day. At exactly 7:00 pm on the day preceding the surprise holiday, students, parents, and teachers will receive an email with the news “No school tomorrow!” We hope this will add some excitement to the spring semester. Please email Paul Oberman if this will cause an undue hardship for your family, and we’ll make arrangements to help out.

Please be reminded that many of your purchases can also make money for Yeshiva Atlanta. We have an online store that is linked from our website that sells sweatshirts, hats, and many other YA items, with a substantial portion of your purchases going to YA. You may also access it at http://yeshiva.dtgzone.com/home. Kosher Casual is a link from our website, and you may purchase clothes from there with a portion of the proceeds going to YA.

Our Lunch and Learn program will continue on alternate Mondays of each month, from noon until 1 pm in the Media Center. This month they will be February 6 and February 27 (because there is no school on February 20, for Presidents’ Day).

PTSA Corner

·         Thank you to the Friedlander family for sponsoring Rosh Chodesh treats this month. If you would like to sponsor Rosh Chodesh in honor of an occasion, contact Sharon Fleitman at sharonrf18@gmail.com or 770-713-3128.  Sponsorship opportunities for Rosh Chodesh treats are available for February 23, April 23, and May 22.

Sports schedules are available as links from our school website, http://www.yeshivaatlanta.org/ and on RenWeb. Please check frequently for any changes to our schedule.

Basketball schedule: On February 2, basketball is away at Mt. Zion at 6:00. Basketball’s final home game and season finale will be on February 7 versus NCCS and Ben Franklin at 6:00. The girls will conclude their season with the Miami Tournament February 15–19. The boys’ team will play in the YU Sarachek Tournament in NYC from March 21–26.

Wrestling schedule: The season will conclude with the Wittenberg Tournament in NYC from Thursday 2/16 – Sunday 2/19.

On Monday 2/6, we will host a lunch and learn in the media center from noon until 1 pm.

Tu B’Shevat will take place on Wednesday, February 8.

Student Council is planning to sponsor a movie night at YA on Saturday night, February 11, after Shabbat ends.

The ACT will be given at YA on Sunday, February 12.

Our next parent meeting is Tuesday, February 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the media center. We will discuss the book Yes, Your Teen is Crazy: Loving Your Kid Without Losing Your Mind by Michael Bradley. This is another opportunity to discuss parenting with other interested parents, so please come regardless of whether you have read the book. Kim Urbach has 3 copies of each of the books on our list in her office, available for parents to check out. Please feel free to come borrow any of the books.

We will not have school on Friday, February 17 or Monday, February 20, creating a long Presidents’ Day weekend. Enjoy the time with your children!

Rosh Chodesh will take place on Thursday February 23 and Friday February 24. We will have combined davening during A and B periods, followed by donuts sponsored by our PTSA on Thursday after davening.

The Cause Fair will take place on Thursday, February 23. Please plan to check out the amazing projects our students have produced!

On Sunday, February 26, we will be conducting admissions tests and interviews for prospective YA students from 9 am until 12:30 pm.

On Monday, February 27, we will host a lunch and learn in the media center from noon until 1 pm.

Chagiga will take place this year on Sunday March 4 and Monday March 5! This year’s production, for females only, is entitled Ima Mia. We hope you will enjoy the fruits of a great deal of work on the part of all of the girls involved!

Yours in YA spirit,

Paul Oberman
