Yeshiva Lions 2007
The Yeshiva Lions 2007- 2008 basketball season has finally arrived! Without saying goodbye to any leaving seniors, the Lady Lions welcome the new season with great excitement and anticipation. In addition to the girls from last year, two new freshmen have joined the team. While the men’s basketball team lost 3 players, they gained 5 new ones. Vigorous, intense practices are currently taking place in the gymnasium everyday after school.
For the first time ever the girls and boys practice drills side by side under the same coach, Marcellino. Sometimes the girls begin practicing first, and sometimes the boys start practicing first; the first block lasts from 4:30-6:15 and the second block from 5:30-7:00. The intervening time when both genders practice is a time filled with wonderful drilling.
Needing all the help he can get, two new assistant coaches aid Marcellino with his incredulous task. Dr. Frankel, the renowned men’s baseball coach, decided to help the basketball teams out as well. Ms. Jamie, once coached by Marcellino himself, also comes to contribute her skills and knowledge of the game to the girl’s team.
With new members and new coaching, the new basketball season of 2007-2008 will be a successful one!

Celebrating Israel at YA
By:
Robyn Kalwerisky
The upcoming year marks the 60th anniversary of the
establishment of the state of Israel. For sixty
years our Israeli brothers and sisters have fought
for the right to survive; sixty years we have
remained a religious minority, and yet a major
presence in the Middle East; and for the past sixty
years, Jews all over the world have dedicated
themselves to keeping the Israeli flame burning
within each of our hearts. After sixty years of such
undying devotion to our homeland, it was finally
time to create a lasting tribute to the country with
which we, at Yeshiva Atlanta, have been so closely
tied for so long. And so it came about that a Mural
was recently painted on the wall directly outside
the Beit Midrash; an expression of artistic
creativity to beautify our building in keeping with
the theme of this school year: “Israel in our
hearts”.
The mural, which was painted in the weeks preceding the beginning of the
new school year, was designed by Arianna Skibell and
me (Robyn Kalwerisky). After carefully studying the
section of the hallway wall on which we were to
paint our mural, the immediate image that came to
mind was that of the Kotel (Western Wall). The
bricks that comprise the bottom half of the wall are
a perfect symbolic replica of the ancient walls of
Jerusalem; and that inspired the development of our
final sketch, which illustrates the glistening
skyline of Israel beneath a blazing sunset. However,
there is another aspect of our depiction that
certainly differentiates it from any other painting:
the four square, empty boxes that are scattered
among the portrait and which will be filled by a
smaller picture created by each grade. The grades
will collaborate and create a depiction of what
Israel represents to them on a personal level.
Afterwards, these grade drawings will be sketched
into their respective boxes on the wall, ultimately
allowing each person in the school to be a part of
the wall.
Rather than simply allow this project to stand in isolation, it was felt
that it would be appropriate to expand upon the
Israel theme by creating an Israel Club in the
school. The purpose of this club is to raise money
for various Israeli organizations through fun and
interactive school events. Hopefully, we will be
able to enjoy ourselves while at the same time
benefiting our homeland. The mural was a perfect way
to kick off the school year, and to show
everyone—students, faculty, and parents—our
commitment to making our Israel-themed year a
success.
