May 2011 Newsletter
Dear YA Parents,
Welcome to the May installment of the parent newsletter. This newsletter will be the finale of the year and should take you through the end of the year. Hard to believe how the year has flown by! Please see a picture from our alumni basketball game (from Thursday April 21) attached.
Breaking news: As the leading Jewish day school fund raiser in the Hunger Walk, Yeshiva Atlanta was allowed the honor of choosing one recipient of $500 allocated toward hunger relief in Atlanta.
Debra Tenenbaum was 1 of 5 winners in the AccuCut Education's Teacher Grant Contest! She submitted her lesson plan on "Cellular Respiration" and, out of 221 entries, she placed in the top five, qualifying for a $200 grant and a Flip Camera! Her
Environmental Science Class plans on building a raised bed herb garden with the money.
Next year, school will start on Thursday, August 18, 2011. (New student orientation will be Monday, August 15, and Tuesday, August 16.) The last day of school will be Thursday June 7, 2012, with makeup exams scheduled for Friday June 8, 2012.

Elegant Essen’s Tuesday/Thursday Lunch Program is in full swing. Orders must be placed by noon the preceding Friday. Ordering information and menus are available via RenWeb.
Spring sports schedules are available as links from our school website, http://www.yeshivaatlanta.org/ and on RenWeb. The only competition remaining this spring is a baseball tournament in Columbus, Ohio May 12 through May 15.

Exams begin on Monday, May 2. Students
should plan to arrive at YA approximately 30 minutes before the exam is
scheduled to begin. Students must be in dress code while on campus the day of
the exam. Students are excused from all regular classes on the day of their AP
exam. Students are still responsible for making up anything that they missed
in a particular class. Students should speak to their teachers in advance, so
they can get ahead on assignments that they will miss during AP administration
rather than falling behind. If the AP exam is in the morning students may leave
for the remainder of the day once the exam is over. If the AP exam is in the
afternoon students may come to school late, as long as they are on-time for
their exam. See below for a list of dates and exam times for the each of the
AP's that will be given at YA.

Our final parent meeting of the year will be on Monday night, May 2, at 7:30 in the media center. This is a discussion for parents of juniors and seniors about “Your Teen’s Post-High School Adjustment” or “Life after Yeshiva Atlanta.”Come speak to other parents about the changes to expect in your child when s/he departs for college or Israel.
National Honor Society induction will be the morning of Tuesday, May 3.
The SAT exam will be offered on Sunday, May 8.
The last day of regularly scheduled classes for seniors is Tuesday, May 10th with Senior Finals being held Wednesday, May 11th--Friday May 13th. Please note that not all teachers give senior finals, and that some seniors will not have finals scheduled for each day. During senior finals, seniors do not have regularly scheduled classes. If seniors do not have a final scheduled for May 11th, 12th, or 13th, they need not come to school that day. If seniors have a morning final, they are expected to attend either the 7:45 or the 8:30 davening.

Parents and rising seniors please join us on Thursday May 26th at 7:30 pm in the media center for a question and answer session about attending a program in Israel the year after graduation. There are so many questions that you and your child must have; we want to answer as many as we can on this night, as well as learn what other information you will need from us to make the best decision for your child.
The last day of classes for non-seniors is Friday, May 27.
There is no school on Monday, May 30, in honor of Memorial Day.
Final exams begin Tuesday May 31 and run through Friday June 3. Students should be in dress code for the final exam period. Davening on these days will begin at 8 am rather than 7:45 am.
