Yitro

In this week's parsha, Yitro, it is noted that Aharon and all of the elders came to eat bread with Moshe’s  father-in-law. The obvious question is "where was Moshe?" Rashi explains that he was actually serving the guests. In an incredible display of humility, Moshe was apparently more concerned about others than about himself.

One of the things that makes me proudest of the Yeshiva Atlanta students is their dedication to service. From the beginning of the year when students built Sukkot both at shuls and at the home of many individuals in the community, the tone was established to reach out to others. Service continued in the form of planting daffodils in memory of those who perished in the Holocaust, feeding firefighters on Thanksgiving, being a part of Amy’s Holiday Party and bringing joy to underprivileged children, donating blood, helping out with Bingo Night at the Jewish Home, volunteering at hospitals on December 25, and our school-wide toy drive. There is a school policy encouraging at least 10 hours of service per year, but to their credit most students exceed this minimum and focus much more heavily on the good they are doing for others, rather than the requirement.

As with many areas, we can learn a lot from our children. In spite of their busy lives, they manage to make time to serve others. In the spirit of Moshe, may we all be inspired to do likewise.

Parents of middle school and high school children, please join us for a discussion of the book Yes, Your Teen is Crazy!: Loving Your Kid Without Losing Your Mind by Michael Bradley. We will meet Tuesday night 2/14 in the YA media center from 7:30 – 8:30. Please come for a parenting discussion, regardless of whether you have read the book. The Yeshiva Atlanta Cause Fair will be held this year on Thursday 2/23 from 3:30 pm – 6:00 pm in the YA Cafeteria. Please come enjoy the fruits of the hard work of our students, as they advocate for a cause they believe in. See attached flyer for details. All women and girls are invited to Yeshiva Atlanta’s Chagiga presentation, Ima Mia, on Sunday, March 4 and Monday, March 5. Doors open at 6:30 pm, and the show begins as 7:15. To purchase tickets or inquire about sponsorships, please email Chagiga2012@gmail.com. Please come enjoy an amazing show! You may also support the show by attending a Zumba event at 7:30 pm at Yeshiva Atlanta this Sunday, February 12, for a $5 admission fee. Shabbat Shalom--

Paul Oberman
