Yitro
In this week's parsha, Yitro, it is noted that Aharon and all of the elders came to eat bread with Moshe’s father-in-law. The obvious question is "where was Moshe?" Rashi explains that he was actually serving the guests. In an incredible display of humility, Moshe was apparently more concerned about others than about himself.
One of the things that makes me proudest of the Yeshiva Atlanta students is their dedication to service. From the beginning of the year when students built Sukkot both at shuls and at the home of many individuals in the community, the tone was established to reach out to others. Service continued in the form of planting daffodils in memory of those who perished in the Holocaust, feeding firefighters on Thanksgiving, being a part of Amy’s Holiday Party and bringing joy to underprivileged children, donating blood, helping out with Bingo Night at the Jewish Home, volunteering at hospitals on December 25, and our school-wide toy drive. There is a school policy encouraging at least 10 hours of service per year, but to their credit most students exceed this minimum and focus much more heavily on the good they are doing for others, rather than the requirement.
As with many areas, we can learn a lot from our children. In spite of their busy lives, they manage to make time to serve others. In the spirit of Moshe, may we all be inspired to do likewise.
